Union Minister for Agriculture questioned within the Rajya Sabha the methodology and knowledge accuracy of the worldwide Hunger Index (GHI) report, that has placed Asian country at 94th among 107 countries in 2020.

·       The Minister same the govt. had written to the organization, Welthungerhilfe, that compiles the report, expressing considerations regarding their methodology, knowledge accuracy and sample size.

·       India’s ranking had improved from 102 in 2019 to ninety four in 2020. But still, Asian country was graded below countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma.

Global Hunger Index

·       It was 1st made in 2006. its printed each October. The 2020 edition marks the fifteenth edition of the GHI.

·       Aim: To comprehensively live and track hunger at the worldwide, regional, and country levels.

·       Calculation: The GHI scores area unit calculated every year to assess progress and setbacks in combating hunger. its calculated on the idea of 4 indicators:

·       Undernourishment: Share of the population with short caloric intake.

·       Child Wasting: Share of kids below age 5 United Nations agency have low weight for his or her height, reflective acute undernutrition.Child Stunting: Share of kids below age 5 United Nations agency have low height for his or her age, reflective chronic undernutrition.

·       Child Mortality: The mortality of kids below the age of 5.

·       Based on the values of the four indicators, the GHI determines hunger on a one hundred- purpose scale wherever zero is that the very best score (no hunger) and 100 is that the worst.

Each country’s GHI score is assessed by severity, from low to very threate.
